................................................................................... Personal Development Plans (PDPs), appraisal and revalidation will be the components of GPs continuing professional development (CPD). Using the personal development plan as the core of continuing professional development allows clear links with appraisal and revalidation to be made. GPs would then engage in one unified process rather than three separate ones. PDPs have been shown to be implementable and educationally sound if educational support is provided. A model based on the PDP shows how educationalists can continue to provide support for the PDP whilst keeping education at the heart of appraisal and revalidation. PDPs offer the following advantages: 1. They are based on learning cycles of we have ownership. 2. They require us to establish what we need to learn rather than just what we want to learn, thus making it more likely that we will improve our skills rather than just reinforce those which are already adequate. 3. They ask us to state what we hope to achieve as a result of a result of the time spent learning. This strongly encourages us to make sure that our plans will produce some practical benefits for our practices and ourselves. This is a move away from learning for the sake of learnings sake, which although of value has a lower priority in this context. 4. They make us crystallize our educational aims into specific objectives, which is useful in two ways. First, being clear about what we need to learn helps us to identify the best educational method by which to achieve it, and second, it stops us from wasting time through going off at a tangent. 5. As a final step, PDPs require us to evaluate our learning cycle. Being critical about what we have achieved and how we have achieved it helps us to learn more effectively in the future.
